History

The city was founded in 1892 and it was a speculative venture in real estate by an investment group. They reserved water front public property known as Sylvan Grove and developed waterfront amenities including a hotel, boating docks and a bathhouse. The community was quickly transformed into a very popular tourist destination. The Grove was acquired by a company that named the area Sylvan Beach and constructed cottage retreats along the waterfront.

In the 1920’s and 1930’s, the Sylvan Beach Amusement Park became nationally recognized and a well known venue for beauty contests and performances by well known bands such as Guy Lombardo, Phil Harris and Benny Goodman. The small residential community was supported by the tourism generated by the beach.

A hurricane in 1943 leveled most of the tourist attractions and they were never rebuilt. The community, which had been renamed La Porte suffered a shrinking beach due to erosion from the shipping traffic creating wake. During World War Two, industrial plants and shipyards began to emerge in nearby communities.
